Church Programs

The Church Program Director is committed to providing the Archdiocese of Washington District with well-planned and inspiring liturgical events as it always has in the past. The Church Program Director will also work with each of the Faithful Navigators throughout the Archdiocese of Washington to help strengthen the relationship of each of the Assemblies with the parishes and councils within their jurisdictions. We will do this by not only offering the services of the Color Corps for parish and council activities, but also by providing our time and talent to the councils and parishes when needed. The Archdiocese of Washington District Church Program Director is committed to ensuring our commitment as Knights of Columbus to support our clergy in their time of need and to witnessing to our fellow Christians throughout the Archdiocese of Washington that we are the strong right arm of the Church!

Patriotic Education

Patriotic education is the lifeblood of the Fourth Degree. It begins with our “leading by example” to children, teens and adults, and expands to the local community and beyond. The breadth of Patriotic education spans into a number of programs that each Assembly can present to community and civic groups, schools and parishes alike, including: an understanding of the Pledge of Allegiance; What is so special about our republic?; What is the symbolic meaning of our flag?; What is proper flag protocol?; What does it mean to be one nation under God?; What is thee significance of national holidays; and a better understanding of American History, especially the role of Catholicism in our nation's history.

Patriotic education in the community can range from Sir Knights as individuals and Assemblies involved in school essay contests, Boy Scouts and American Heritage Girls assistance, flag retirement ceremonies, Maryland and American history commemorative events, veteran support and even letters to the editor in defense of religious liberty and justice.

Every year, each Assembly should have at least one “ordinary” and one “extraordinary” Patriotic Education event. The minimum expectation is to have a sound “Good of the Order” program at each Fourth Degree meeting. Almost any “Ordinary” Fourth Degree activity can become an “extraordinary” Patriotic Education event with just a little “extra” creativity and emphasis.

Ideas and success stories will be complied and disseminated to all Assemblies for consideration. We will also work with interested school teachers to develop appropriate lesson plans for patriotic education on flag protocol, national holidays, flag symbolism and more.

Fraternal Programs

As the name implies, the goal of our fraternal programming is to bring more camaraderie among the Assemblies within the District. Although many of our programs reflect our patriotic mission to provide color corps and color guard support at religious and civic events, this is not our sole duty and we should seek to provide a fun and relaxing atmosphere for all of our members through a variety of events. The Master and his  administration would like to provide increased opportunities for recreation and enjoyment for all the effort provided by its members. With our traditional Christmas Dinner and Summer Picnic, the District would like to explore activities that could include attending sporting events, tours of the many museums in our Nation's Capital, and tickets to musical acts and stage shows playing in the Washingron Area.

Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS)

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Program is the vehicle that the Knights of Columbus uses in the "Serving Those Who Served" program. The Vice President for Fraternal Services has oversight of the VAVS program. The program is directed and managed by the Assistant for Military and Veterans Affairs, our District's own SK Col. Charles. H. Gallina, USMC (Ret.), KHS, PSD, FVSM, FDD, PGK-C, PFN-C who also serves as the National VAVS Representative to the VAVS National Advisory Committee (NAC).

The KofC VAVS program is executed through the Fourth Degree chain of command through the U.S. Vice Supreme Masters and District Masters. Under the program, a Knight of Columbus is certified as a VAVS representative or deputy representative at a VA medical center. Our certified representatives and deputy representatives attend hospital meetings and organize efforts for K of C volunteers. Our District is in charge of providing volunteers for VA Medical Center in Washington, DC.

What it takes to become a Knights of Columbus VAVS Volunteer
